Corporate Spelling Bee: The last Wednesday in April
General Information:

Just what is it anyway...?
It may be a lawyer versus an accountant, a secretary, a sales representative, a production supervisor, a chemist, or a banker faced with the possibility of spelling “OENOPHILIST” - a connoisseur of wine, or “VASODILATOR” - an agent that causes blood vessels to dilate. Someone will be correct and emerge a winner.

The Delaware Coalition for Literacy, Inc. (DCL), Annual Corporate Spelling Bee has been organized to provide a visible program that promotes literacy issues throughout the state. In addition, the Spelling Bee generates corporate donations to assist in the Coalitions’ effort to break the chain of Illiteracy in Delaware.

Using the traditional Spelling Bee format, a pronouncer will ask participants in the bee to spell words, some well known, others basically unknown, after they have been pronounced and used in a sentence. The participant then spells the word. If correct, the participant remains in the bee; if incorrect, the participant sits down. The last remaining speller, after spelling the final word correctly, is proclaimed the winner and is awarded the prestigious DCL Spelling Bee Trophy.

Embassy Suites of Newark is our host for the Corporate Spelling Bee. The bee will be held on The last Wednesday in April . A delightful reception following the Spelling Bee gives everyone a chance to recount those impossible words.

The Delaware Coalition for Literacy feels that the time honored tradition of the Spelling Bee points out the strong need to provide literacy services to the adult population in Delaware. The goal established at our recent Delaware Adult Literacy Summit 2000 states “by 2010, every adult Delawarean will have access to a high quality, coordinated system of learning services that will enable them to make measurable gains toward achieving their goals and meeting responsibilities as family members, workers, community members, and lifelong learners.” This is a lofty goal, but one that is supported by DCL and adult education providers throughout the state.

To take part in the Spelling Bee, simply complete and submit the registration form. It is that easy. Support DCL’s efforts to eradicate illiteracy, have a fun competition, and meet new friends. The individuals you help may never know, but you will know your company or firm has helped to make a difference.
